MUNICH -- Mercedes' AMG performance arm expects its first full-electric car to win new fans for the subbrand with its quick acceleration and nimble handling.
The subbrand unveiled the AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ on Sunday, ahead of its public outing at the Munich auto show this week.
Further all-electric AMG models will follow in the not-too-distant future, AMG Chairman Philipp Schiemer said in a statement.
"With our first all-electric AMG vehicle, we will undoubtedly appeal to and win over a new clientele for Mercedes-AMG," Schiemer said.
The EQS 53 4MATIC+ is based on the AMG GT 4-door Coupé but future battery-powered cars will use the AMG.EA platform developed in-house, Schiemer said.
The sedan's electric powertrain used two motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear axle.
The basic version achieves a maximum total output of 484 kW (649 hp, 658 PS), while a Dynamic Plus package raises the output to up to 560 kW (751 hp, 761 PS).
The maximum motor torque is up to 1020 newton meters (752 pounds-feet).
The sedan accelerates from 0-97 kph (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds and from 0-100 kph in 3.8 seconds. Its maximum speed is limited to 220 kph.
AMG has given the sedan what it calls a "powerful sonorous sound" to mimic the sound of an internal combustion engine. The sound system uses loudspeakers, shakers and a sound generator to create engine notes to match the current driving status, the selected driving mode or the driver's wishes.
The car is equipped with rear-axle steering as standard, giving it more agile handling.
The vehicle is equipped with a 400-volt lithium ion battery with AMG specific wiring adapted to focus on high performance capacity, along with a battery management system is also configured specifically for AMG.
The battery also features higher charging capacity, higher energy density, and the possibility to install updates for the battery management system over the air (OTA).
The battery can be charged with up to 200 kW at quick-charging stations with direct current, and an onboard charger means the vehicle can also be charged at home or at public charging stations with up to 22 kW of alternating current.
An Eco charging function reduces the battery load during charging to slow down the natural ageing process of the battery. Meanwhile, intelligent temperature and charging management is combined with aluminum extrusions of the battery frame to help ensure the optimum battery operating temperature in multiple operating conditions.
