ZF Friedrichshafen signed a deal this week to supply Nio with steer-by-wire technology, making the major Chinese electric-vehicle maker the German supplier’s first customer in Asia Pacific to adopt the advance technology.
ZF earlier this year demonstrated its steer-by-wire technology for front axles in Germany.
The technology transmits driver commands to the steering system completely through electrical signals, rather than via a mechanical link between the steering wheel and front axle.
Under the agreement, ZF said it will also join hands with Nio to develop industry-leading processes and quality standards, without divulging additional details.
The two companies will also collaborate on brand promotion, product marketing, technology and quality enhancements as well as customer service, ZF added.
